紅色情深 (Red 1994): As if a ultimate force is looking at us



     
     我記得小時候的春暉電影台,一個奇葩無比的藝術片專門頻道。我記得曾幾何時聯祥國片台也播法國片,我看米娜的故事每次都可以哭。我記得奇士勞夫斯基曾掀起一陣炫風,茱莉葉畢諾許清麗絕俗的海報出沒在大街小巷。我記得電視上老是重播白色情迷(好奇怪的一部片)。我記得報紙上說紅色情深在那年的坎城全軍覆沒、敗給了初出茅廬的昆丁塔倫提若(和他的Pulp Fiction)。我記得一個週末華視十二點播雙面維若妮卡,我躺在沙發上邊看邊睡著了。
   
       In my childhood era,  there was one unusual television channel specialized in playing art films. I remember once even a Chinese film channel could play French movies, and Mina Tannebaum always made me cry.  I remember watching Kieslowski used to be a fashion in Taiwan. Juliette Binoche's beautiful face on Blue's poster was visible everywhere. I remember somehow White was often re-broacasted (it's a weird movie to me). I read from newspapers saying that Red failed in the year's Cannes Film Festival, to a rising star Quentin Tarantino (and his Pulp Fiction). I remember on one Saturday night I watched The Double Life of Veronique on my sofa and fell into sleep.    

       
        生命瞬息萬變,即使看似不動的風景,原來也會有一天再也不一樣。或是大師遠去,再也不復當年的鏡頭了,無比留戀紅色情深裡的各種細節,還有日內瓦市區街景,是最雋永最勾魂的那種紛圍。Zbigniew Preisner幽深的管弦配樂,仿若無構圖的生活化場景、伊蓮雅歌不世出的天使美貌、九零年代式的優雅而厚重的穿著(粗高鞋、毛呢、厚絲襪、墊肩大衣)、 石磚造建築的沈重歷史感。

       Life is changeable. Even a seemly constant view, one day you will realize that they are never the same. Or maybe the sceneries were gone with the master who created them? I am deeply fascinated by every detail in Red. This film presents me the most appealing atmosphere that only existed in the 90s. I mean the stone buildings and urban landscape of Vienna, Zbigniew Preisner's orchestral music, the simple and structure-less photography, the unsung angelic super beauty of Irene Jacob, and that out-of-date fashion styles, e.g., the low think heels, heavy sweater, and over-sized  coat with stupid shoulder-pads.    


     
       
        故事敘述維也納的大學生兼服裝模特兒 Valentina無意撞傷了一位老法官Kern的狗。法官是一個冷血古怪的人,監聽鄰居的通訊,對自己的所作所為而無愧疚,對外界人事物冷漠疏離。善良的Valentine發現Kern的行徑之後和他幾番爭辯究竟何謂道德、何謂欺騙?他們逐漸向對方吐露心事,結為忘年之交。原來純真善良的Valentina有著狗血的破碎家庭和老是咄咄逼人缺乏安全感的男友。老法官年輕時有一段心碎的回憶,他曾與金髮美麗的學姐熱烈的相愛,卻慘遭背叛,從此再也無法相信愛情。

     The story happened in Vienna. A college student as well as fashion model, Valentine (by Irene Jacob), incidentally bumped a dog belonged to an old judge, Kern, whom is played by the legendary French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant. Kern is a weird person, who eavesdropped his neighbors' telephone communications, and felt no guilty about his behaviors. He was cold and indifferent to the outside world and even to his wounded dog. Innocent Valentine discovered Kern's eavesdropping and had several arguments with Kern about what morality and deception are. Also, they began to pour their hearts out to each other and became friends beyond ages. Innocent and kind Valentine came from a tragic family background and maintained a difficult long-distant relationship with a boyfriend who lacks of sense of security to her. The old judge had a heartbroken memory. Kern used to deeply fell in love with a blond, beautiful senior in his law department but was betrayed, and he can never believe in love again.




        在同一個時空裡,Valentine總是和Auguste 擦身而過。簡直像命定的巧合一樣,住在一街之隔的地方、前後去打保齡球、到唱片行聆聽並購買同樣的歌曲,或許他們早已注意到彼此了(Auguste饒負興味地看個Valentine佇立街頭的巨幅海報。Valentine 從法官的竊聽中得知對方的戀情),卻始終沒有緣份相識。不可思議的是,Auguste像是一個平行世界裡年輕的Kern,他們的命運有許多雷同:準備司法考試成為法官、書掉下來而打開的頁面正是考試的題目、愛上金髮美女卻目睹對方的出軌。這故事好像說了什麼又好像沒說什麼,Valentine和Auguste而後分別搭上油輪前往英國,在老法官的注視下,電視播出油輪傾覆,幾百人喪生,他們倆奇蹟似地獲救 ,電影定格在她與Auguste相偕的畫面,Valentine的眼神,正如她拍攝的廣告,彷彿是穿越了宇宙的表象、凝視著生命的奧妙。
 
     On the other hand, Valentine always passes by a young man, Auguste. Just like destined coincidences, they live in the apartments separated by one street, played bowling ball in the same time and place, went to the same shop, listened and purchased the same song. Maybe they had noticed each other (Auguste gazed at Valentine's advertisement board and smiled; Valentine heard Auguste's relationship from Kern's eavesdropping), but never had chance to know one another. Also unbelievably, Auguste is like another younger Kern in a parallel universe. He shares several similarities with Kern: they both became judges, their books fell down and turned to the page with question that was later asked in their judicial examinations, and both fell in loved with a blond beauty but witnessed her betrayal.  This story seems incomplete. In the end, Valentine and Auguste took on the same cruise ship to England. Under the watch of the old judge, the televisions said the ship collapsed, and hundreds of people died, while Valentine and Auguste were two of the six survivors (the others, interestingly, are the leading characters in Blue and White). The film's last scene implies that Valentine and Auguste finally know each other, and pauses in Valentine's  mysterious gaze, which was surprisingly the same as she did in the advertisement board, as if looking through the presences of the universe, seeing the subtle substances of life.

      

     

        怎麼形容這部電影呢?不只是技術之美,有一種無可言喻的謎團藏掖在情節之後,Valentina和Auguste不像是「向左走向右走」的命運乖離,似乎背後有更刻意的力量在掌控他們的命運。Kern和Auguste的關係究竟是什麼?為什麼他們具有相似的命運?仔細觀察老法官的表演,他是個全知者,預知了Auguste和Valentina的命運:當Auguste與女友擲硬幣決定要不要出門打保齡球的時候,他也拋出了硬幣(演員的表情很明顯表示擲幣結果是一樣的)。他寄狗狗的醫藥費給Valetina,他怎麼知道Valentina的地址(Valentina問了,他卻輕描淡寫帶過)。在與Valentina爭論後,他提筆寫信告發自己竊聽的罪行(之後他刻意向Valentina提到:當時用了一輩子的鋼筆居然沒水了,只好用鉛筆寫信。這呼應到Auguste女友在他通過考試後送他的鋼筆),正是因為Kern的告發讓Auguste的女友結識了新人(在Kern的注視下)、進而出軌。他甚至提到告發自己的目的是為了讓Valentina看到報紙會回來看他。他建議Valentina搭船去英國,並一再確認。在兩人最後的會面,Valentina出發前,他告訴Valetina他夢見對方將會獲得真愛和幸福,當Valentina問他有否看見丈夫的長相時,他卻語焉不詳。當電視上播出油輪失事的消息,Kern的表情既不擔憂也不恐懼,當他看到電視上播出Valentina和Auguste雙雙出現時,也不表現出如釋重負或甚至欣喜,比較像是一個確認,彷彿一切都在他的掌握之中。

   How to interpret this film? besides the dedicated techniques and the clearly posted moral discussions (from Kern's eavesdropping), there's an indefinable mystery behind the plot. The story should not be understood as simply happens and coincidence, but is controlled by a substantial power. What is the connection between Kern and Ausguste, and why they shared the same destiny? To solve this mystery, you have to observe Trintignant' performance meticulously-- The judge is omniscient in the film, who has predicted the fates of Valentine and Auguste. When Auguste flipped a coin to decide if he would go bowling, Kern did the same thing (and Trintingnant's expression told us that the judge did get the same result). Kern sent money to Valentine for paying the medical treatment of his dog, but how did he get to know Valentine's name and address? Valentine asked, but he answered in an ambiguous manner. After arguing with Valentine, he wrote a letter to accuse himself as eavesdropping. When he wrote, later it was mentioned to Valentine, that the fountain pen he had used for almost a lifetime ran out of ink--which corresponds to Auguste, who received a fountain pen as a gift from his girlfriend. It is also due to Kern's confession that made Auguste's girlfriend met her new lover on court (under the gaze of Kern), and led to Auguste's heart-brokenness. Kern also told Valentine that he confessed to make Valentine to read it from the newspaper, and came back to visit him again. He suggested Valentine to take a cruise ship to England, and confirmed her ticket. In their last meeting, before Valentine set off for England, Kern told Valentine his dream, in which Valentine finds true love and happiness. While Valentine continued to ask if he saw the face of her future husband, he also answer unclearly. Most important of all, when Kern watch the news of the cruise ship's collapse, he seemed not worried or feared, and when he saw Valentine showed up together with Auguste, he did not express relief or happy; instead, he looks like making a confirmation, as if everything is under his control.

       
 
   
       所以,在這部電影裡,Auguste這位神秘的法官是神,或者更正確的說,是作者(導演)的化身。遭受愛人的背叛後,他孤獨終老,但在這部電影的世界裡他依舊年輕,與自己純真完美的真愛Valentina一再擦身而過,但這一次,當Valentina來到他面前,這一次他希望可以拯救自己的人生,他看著自己的命運之輪再次重複,但這一次他決定讓Valentina加入,即使結局的船難讓數百人喪生,總算是成救了他對自己的救贖。你可以視作Kern來到了一個平行世界、他來自未來、甚至他再創造一個宇宙(他就是作者),總之,Kern熟悉這部電影的意志,或是,這部片就是他意志的展現。
   
     Therefore, I argue, this mysterious judge is the god of Red, or, to be precise, he is the incarnation of author/director, Kieslowski. After betrayed by his lover, he lives numerous days of loneliness, but in the universe of this film he is still the young and aspirational Auguste, who always passes by his destined true love, the innocent, perfect Valentine. When Valentine came to him, this time, he wants to change his life. Kern watched his fate repeated on Auguste, and he decided, in this universe, to include Valentine in Auguste's life. Even though the cruise ship would kill several hundreds of people, but, after all, he completed the redemption to himself. You may interpret as Kern as coming from a parallel universe or from future, or even as he created a new universe (he is the author of this film). In essence, Kern knows the will of this film, or, to put it this way, this film is the presentation of his will.




      這是一部值得仔細探究細節的電影,Kieslowski 在劇情中討論道德、家庭、人性,但也藉由Valentine表達他對美、善良、與愛的希望,還偷渡了巧妙隱藏的世界觀。你是否曾經覺得某些藝術創作讓你激動莫名,彷彿窺探到了另一個宇宙的存在?這就是這樣一部電影,看似簡單,卻深刻、奧妙,彷彿無窮無盡。如果問我願意進入哪一部電影的世界生活?這就是我的選擇。

   This is film open to interpretations. It covers many issues, e.g., morality, family, and humanity, but, through the character of Valentine, Kieslowski also presents his faith in beautifulness, virtue, and love. He even hides a dedicated philosophical view behind the plot. Have you feel some artistic works endowing  you the excitement as if you can discover the access to another universe? This is the film, which seems simple, but deep, subtle, and leaving endless details to scrutinize. If being asked about what film's world that I would most desire to live in, this is my primary choice.
